With Kids Through Winter: The Perfect Gear for the Cold Season
Snowball fights, sledding, or jumping into puddles with a running start: in the cold season, the world is an extra-large adventure playground. To make sure the little ones can run around without a care, equip them to be especially weather- and winter-proof. Find out how it works here.

Dressed perfectly layer by layer - hello, onion look!
Whether big or small: layering is the best idea for a winter-proof day. Each layer has a special function: the first layer creates a pocket of warmth around the body and therefore sits directly on the skin. Middle layers provide additional insulation and help wick away moisture. The outermost layer prevents water or wind from penetrating. The closer a layer is to the skin, the more breathable and skin-friendly it should be. The further out, the more weatherproof it needs to be. A top combo for little adventurers? Cotton thermal underwear, a cozy sweater, and water-resistant or waterproof pants and jacket.

Crack the Outdoor Code
You can determine the functionality of water- or wind-resistant outdoor clothing even before you buy. Take rain resistance, for example: the water column (in mm) indicates how much water a garment can keep out before it lets moisture through. High values mean more protection; from 10,000 mm, even a heavy downpour is no challenge. Terms like water-repellent, water-resistant, and waterproof are easy to decode. Repellent fabrics offer light protection, water-resistant clothing keeps out moderate moisture, and waterproof garments don't let anything through at all. You can tell if an outdoor companion is windproof by features such as sealed seams, a covered zipper, and snug-fitting cuffs.

No chance for cold feet or hands
Perfect winter shoes for kids are excellently lined, have a waterproof outer layer, and above all, a non-slip sole. A high shaft stabilizes the ankle so that nothing goes wrong on slippery ground. When buying, keep in mind that toes need enough space – especially if your child is wearing extra-thick cozy socks. Of course, a hat, scarf, and gloves are also a must. Opt for accessories like neck gaiters or multi-functional scarves. This way, nothing can slip or feel too tight. Younger children usually feel most comfortable in mittens. Older ones want more freedom of movement for their fingers.
Extra tip: To ensure winter clothing for kids between 2 and 8 years fits for more than one season, look out for elastic cuffs and stretchy materials.
Hibernation for Outdoor Gear
To make sure your functional clothing lasts, wash it at low temperatures and without fabric softener. Waterproof your textiles to extend their water protection. When spring is around the corner, store your winter clothing in a dust- and moisture-proof place. Make sure it can "breathe."
