How to: Buying the right baby clothing sizes

Is your baby arriving soon and you're unsure which baby sizes they will need? Or would you like to delight new parents with a baby shower gift? Whether you are buying baby clothes as a gift or for your own little one, choosing the right size is often not that easy. Our baby size chart gives you a great overview. Find out here what else you need to consider when it comes to baby sizes and which guidelines you can easily follow.

Baby Sizes – Age and Height are Key

  • Most baby sizes are based on height measured in centimeters. For example, you might see size 24.5 in on the label. This means the garment will generally fit babies with a height between 22.5 in and 24.5 in. For hats and headwear, head circumference in cm is usually the key measurement.
  • However, the label may also feature an age range, such as "0 to 3 months." In this case, you can assume the garment will fit most babies of that age. Baby sizes by age can generally offer a good guide, but it is important to keep in mind that babies grow at different rates.

A great starting point: Baby size chart

If you want to buy baby clothes, a size chart provides the best guidance. In most cases, there are three columns. The first indicates the baby's age, with clothing sizes usually referring to the months of life. The second lists the regular body length that babies of this age have on average. The last column then shows you the matching clothing size. Often, baby size charts distinguish between boys and girls, as the average size by age also depends on gender.

Tip

Because of the diaper, you can easily buy baby pants or rompers one size larger. This allows your baby to move around comfortably.

Better to get two sizes for newborns

Your baby will be on the way soon, and you have surely already imagined what they will look like.

Although your OB-GYN can give you an estimate, how big and heavy your baby will be remains a surprise until you meet them for the first time. For this reason, it is recommended to choose two baby sizes for their first wardrobe. Most babies fit into size 50 or 56 after birth.
